I haven’t checked into The Elegant Variation in a couple of days and found a fantastic post about the rules of writing fiction. Mark Sarvas references a list of rules by Elmore Leonard that he has hated since 2001 as well as a new list of rules curated by the Guardian.
Here are some highlights:
Stupid rule: Avoid prologues.
Good rule: Prayer might work. (Margaret Atwood)
Stupid rule: Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.
Good rule: Editing is everything. (Esther Freud)
